Whittier 5th graders paired with their Kindergarten buddies to help them learn about sequencing today! Following a fun activity, all of the students joined together to sing a song to help remember how to sequence, "Where the Green Grass Grows All Around"! 5th Grade/Kindergarten Buddies are another wonderful example of how Whittier really is one big family!

Rotary Members read with Whittier Students! 4.18.13
The Rotary Club of Waukegan and the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club teamed up for the Rotary Reads Programs at three Waukegan elementary schools this morning, including Whittier Elementary School!
Together, the clubs have recruited volunteers from their own ranks and from the Waukegan Park District and Waukegan Public Library to read to students in 18 classrooms at North Elementary School, Washington Elementary School and Whittier Elementary School.
In addition to reading to the students, the clubs donated books to each classroom and to the school libraries. The books were provided through matching funds from the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Waukegan.
Waukegan Public Schools and Whittier Elementary would like to thank the Rotary Clubs and their members for taking time to share the joys of reading with students!

Whittier 5th graders learn about internet safety! 4.12.13
Whittier 5th graders took a trip across the "big field" to Webster Middle School in order to learn about internet safety as part of the "Internet Safety Symposium", and how they can make sure they are SAFE when surfing the 'net. Thanks to Webster Middle School teachers and students, and Whittier 5th grade teachers for making this important event happen! Our students learned a great deal about the dangers of being on the internet, and many valuable skills to help them stay safe when on the internet!
1st Grade "Animal Unit"! 4.12.13
During the month of March, first graders completed a unit on animals. The students researched many different types of animals - from dogs to jellyfish. As part of the study, each child needed to create a project and prepare a presentation. During their research they learned many interesting facts about their animal. The projects were very creative and impressive! We are very proud of them!
Ms. Fleming's 3rd Grade Class - "Egg Drop Challenge"! 4.12.13
Students in Ms. Fleming's 3rd grade class have spent time creating a device to protect an egg from being cracked by Ms. Fleming! Students had the opportunity to construct a device made out of any material - would it withstand the impact after being dropped by Ms. Fleming?
There were three stages to the challenge - Ms. Fleming stood on a table and dropped all the eggs. Those that survived then made it to the next round, being dropped off the playground equipment. Those lucky eggs that survived, they were thrown up in the air by Ms. Fleming herself! Students learned about gravity, impact and velocity, among other things. IT'S SCIENCE!!!
