Whittier PTO helps celebrate "The Day of The Child"! 4.26.13

Whittier PTO celebrated BIG for EL DIA DEL NIÑO on Friday, April 26th, by offering a completely free event to all students and their families!  There was food,  drinks, raffles, and a fantastic DJ that pumped up the dance for all the little ones.  All of the kids in attendance received a gift bag and they danced the afternoon away with their peers and their teachers.  In this manner, Whittier continues to recognize the importance of cultural diversity and the pride of being able to learn from others.  Whittier Elementary School wishes to thank the participation and help from all the parents that have worked so hard for the benefit of the students.
Thank you Whittier PTO!

Whittier Celebrates Autism Awareness Month! 4.30.13

Whittier truly “put the pieces together” this past month by raising $1,243.41 for the "Autism Speaks" Foundation.  April’s Autism Awareness campaign provided students with opportunities to show their support of all humankind.  Students sold puzzle pieces and displayed them outside of their classrooms in honor of autism awareness.  Dressed in blue, Whittier Wolves participated in a school walk demonstration in support of children with autism.  Way to go, Wolves!!!

2nd graders begin their "A-B-C" year end countdown! 4.29.13

The 2nd grade team has begun the of the end of the year "A-B-C" countdown! "Apple Day" was first, where students had to make a prediction as to whether or not an apple would turn brown. April 29th was "C" - "Career Day".  Mrs. Lerner invited local people from Waukegan to come to her class and talk about their careers.  Jimmy and Lisa, the morning co-hosts of the 102.3 XLC radio station of the same name, began the day.  The students were definitely star struck!. Mr. Babowice, who is a Waukegan-based lawyer, came, and also Mrs. Horawitz, a dog trainer, talked to the class and gave a demonstration with her dog.  Mr. Smith, our school Principal, talked to the students about all that he does during the day!  Mrs. Butler, our school psychologist, informed the kids on all that she does as well for students and teachers at Whittier. The students were very excited to learn about so many different careers and had fun meeting new people.
